Tea and Gut Health: Pu-Erh

It's Thanksgiving week! Which means we will all enjoy a couple of days of eating our body weight in turkey, stuffing, and pumpkin pie. While we all enjoy a good Thanksgiving feast sometimes our body does not thank us for it. Today we are highlighting Pu-Erh tea, this tea is known for helping aid in digestion after a day of feasting.

Pu-Erh is a fermented black tea that originates from the Yunnan Mountains in China. It has been considered a delicacy for centuries, not just because of its taste but also because of its wonderful added health benefits. In Traditional Chinese Medicine it is believed that digestive issues stem from an "internal dampness". Pu-Erh is known for bringing a cooling YIN energy to the body, which in turn can help reduce the "internal dampness". This cooling YIN energy can help support digestion and overall better health. Below are a few quick facts about Pu-Erh and gut health.

  • Pu-Erh contains microorganisms that can help support a healthy gut flora. Due to Pu-Erh being a fermented tea it contains a large amount of gut-friendly microorganisms that when consumed regularly can help balance the gastrointestinal system.

  • In China Pu-Erh tea is commonly served alongside oily or greasy meals. It is believed that Pu-Erh helps to "flush out" the oil from the body after consumption.

  • Traditional Chinese Medicine believes that Pu-Erh has the ability to also cleanse the blood stream and reduce inflammation in the body. The Chinese view it as a tonic that can help the body restore its balance. It is said that it can help "drive toxins out of the body", which would benefit the digestive system since one of its main functions is to transport toxins out of the body.
